Primary 7

The Primary 7's are currently studying biographical writing. Below are some of the Biographies they have written.

Anne Frank

Annelies Marie Frank was born in Frankfurt, Maine, Germany on June 12th 1929. Her family moved to Amsterdam. She is famous all over the world for her diary she wrote during World War Two.

On Anne Frank’s 13th birthday she received a diary, she named it “Kitty”, which she liked the best out of all her presents. In 1933 Adolf Hitler took over Amsterdam and made anti – Jewish laws. World War Two started. The family moved into a secret annex. One day in August 1944, after a few years of hiding, the Frank family was found and were put into a concentration camp. Anne and her sister Margot died in Bergen- Belsen concentration camp of typhus. Her mother Edith died of starvation and her father Otto was the only one (out of their family) who survived. While Anne was in hiding she kept her diary. Her father Otto kept her diary and two years after she died, in 1947, her father published her diary unchanged. In 1959, a movie was filmed about her diary. Her diary has been published in over thirty languages.

I think Anne Frank was an inspirational person (but also chatty) right up to her death in March 1945.

Vincent Van Gogh

Vincent Van Gogh was born March, 1853 in Zundert, Netherlands. He was a famous artist and he wanted to be a famous artist when he started painting.

Van Gogh loved art when he was young. He began drawing when he was a child. He did drawings until he made a decision to be an artist. He made lots of good paintings.  He made more than 2,000 art works, around 900 paintings and 1,100 drawings and sketches. When he was young he wanted to be a pastor. He worked in Belgium and that was where he started sketching local community people. He made a famous painting called ‘The Potato Eaters’ and ‘The Sunflowers’. He worked for years until he died.

I think he was an excellent artist and he will be remembered for lots of years. I hope his paintings will be remembered for many years yet.

Nelson Mandela

Nelson Mandela was a famous politician who served as President of South Africa from 1994 to 1999, he fought for his rights and ended up in prison for 27 years.

Nelson Mandela was born in Mvezo on the 18th July 1918. His grandfather was the king of the Thembu people. When he was nine, his father died of tuberculosis. He and his lawyer Oliver Tambo provided free or low cost legal counsel to the black people who lacked representation. He has received many South African awards, including the Nobel peace prize in 1993, the Order of Merit, the Order of St.John by Queen Elizabeth 11 and the Presidential Medal of Freedom by George W, Bush. Before he got the awards he was arrested for 27 years because he was fighting for his rights. Nelson Mandela was married three times. His first one to Evelyn Mase who died in 2005 aged 54. His second time to Winnie Mandela which ended in separation. And his last one to Graca Michael who fled off and through all the marriages he was left with 6 children.

I think Nelson Mandela was a great leader, when things got bad he still was fighting for his rights and he started at a young age. I think everyone should be like him.

J.K. Rowling

J.K. Rowling’s first novels were published in 1997. Ever since her stories about Harry Potter have sold millions of books worldwide, making her a very famous author.

Joan Kathleen Rowling (aka J.K. Rowling) was born in Gloucester during 1965. Her first memory of telling stories was when she was six.

When she was at school she entertained many of her friends by telling them long serial stories.

When she was eighteen she studied French and Classics at university. After she became a secretary, she said “ I only liked working in offices because you could type stories up on the computer  when no one was looking.”

J.K.Rowling was on a train journey to London when the idea of making Harry Potter came to her mind.

When she was twenty-six she moved to Portugal to teach English. While she was there she met and soon married a local journalist. Soon after there daughter Jessica was born.

When she was twenty-eight she travelled back to England, there she began to write Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. As her flat was cold and damp, to keep warm, she sat in cafes, writing down ideas for her stories in a notebook. Later on her ideas were rejected by publishers. Finally, Bloomsbury Publishing Plc saw that fame would soon come to her and Harry Potter. Later on it turned into a worldwide success.

J.K. Rowling’s ability to write books and grab the attention of her readers is amazing. Harry Potter’s competition is waiting. Will he be able to stand the test of time against Dahl or Tolkien?

FACTS ABOUT THE IRISH FAMINE

  • Almost a quarter of a million people died (249,335).
  • There was little blight in 1847 but people still had no potatoes to eat. There had been few seed potatoes to plant.
  • Disease was the biggest killer in Black ’47. More people died from disease than from hunger.
  • To make matters even worse, the winter of 1847 was a very cold one. There were so many storms that any fishermen who still had not sold their nets or boots in order to buy food could not go to sea to fish.
